Buying wheels and tires without getting it wrong
A wheel and tire purchase is really five decisions stacked on top of each other, and the order matters. Get the first two wrong and nothing else can save the order.
1. Bolt pattern and hub bore
These are pass or fail. Bolt pattern is the number of lugs and the diameter of the circle they sit on, written as 6x139.7 or 5x114.3. Hub bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel that locates on your hub. If the pattern does not match, the wheel does not mount. If the bore is smaller than your hub, it will not sit flat. If the bore is larger, which is common on aftermarket wheels, you need hub centric rings to center it properly. Start with the bolt pattern guide.
2. Diameter and width
Diameter is the wheel size in inches and width is the distance between the bead seats. Width matters more than most buyers expect, because every tire has a range of approved wheel widths and mounting outside that range distorts the contact patch. A 275 wide tire behaves very differently on an 8 inch wheel than on a 10 inch wheel.
3. Offset and backspacing
Offset is where most fitment problems actually happen. It is the distance in millimeters from the wheel mounting face to the wheel centerline. Positive offset tucks the wheel under the vehicle, negative offset pushes it outboard. Moving from a factory +30mm to a -12mm offset pushes the wheel out over 40mm per side, which changes stance dramatically and can put the tire into the fender. 4. Tire size and overall diameter
Once the wheel is settled, the tire has to keep overall rolling diameter close to stock unless you are lifting the vehicle. Staying within about 3 percent of the factory diameter keeps your speedometer accurate, keeps the transmission shifting where it was calibrated, and keeps ABS and stability control reading correct wheel speeds. 5. Load rating and construction
Finally, make sure the wheel load rating clears your axle rating and that the tire construction matches the job. If you tow or haul, that means an LT tire in load range D or E rather than a P-metric passenger tire. Load capacity is not a place to round down.

How do I know what wheels will fit my vehicle?
Four numbers decide it: bolt pattern, hub bore, diameter and width, and offset. Bolt pattern and hub bore have to match your vehicle exactly or the wheel will not mount. Diameter, width and offset determine whether the assembled wheel and tire clears your suspension, brakes and fenders. Can I put a bigger tire on my truck without a lift?
Usually you can go up one size on a half-ton truck with nothing more than a leveling kit, and often the factory size has a little room already. Going from a 33 inch to a 35 inch tire almost always needs a leveling kit plus some trimming at the front bumper corners. 37 inch tires need a real lift and typically a re-gear. The limiting factor is rarely the fender opening, it is the inner fender liner and the control arm at full steering lock and full suspension compression.
Do I need new TPMS sensors for a second set of wheels?
If your vehicle has direct TPMS, which means it displays individual tire pressures, then yes. Each wheel needs its own sensor, and the vehicle needs a relearn procedure so it knows which sensor sits at which corner. You can use OE sensors or programmable universal sensors, which are usually cheaper and cover more applications. If your vehicle only shows a generic low pressure warning light, you likely have indirect TPMS and need no hardware in the wheel.
What is the difference between load range D and load range E?
Load range describes how much air pressure a light truck tire is built to hold, and therefore how much weight it can carry. Load range D is roughly an 8-ply rating and load range E is roughly a 10-ply rating. Load range E carries more weight and resists sidewall flex better under a trailer or a heavy bed, at the cost of a firmer ride. If you tow regularly or run a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck, load range E is usually the right answer.
Should I buy tires in a set of four or can I replace two?
Replace all four whenever you can, and treat it as mandatory on all-wheel drive vehicles. Tires of different tread depths have different rolling diameters, and on an all-wheel drive system that difference is read as wheel slip and can load up the center differential or transfer case. On two-wheel drive vehicles you can replace in pairs, but always put the new pair on the rear axle regardless of which wheels drive the car, because the rear losing grip first is much harder to recover from.
Do wheel spacers damage wheel bearings?
Quality hub centric spacers installed correctly do not cause failures on their own, but they do change the load geometry. Moving the wheel outboard increases the leverage on the bearing, so a large spacer combined with a wide wheel and an aggressive negative offset does add measurable load. Use hub centric billet aluminum spacers that locate on your hub, use bolt-on style spacers for anything 1 inch or thicker, confirm you still have full thread engagement on the studs, and torque properly.
