On a car, wheel weight matters more than on a truck. Wheels are unsprung and rotating mass, so every pound you take off a wheel does more for ride quality, braking and acceleration than a pound taken off the body. This is the single reason flow-formed and forged wheels are worth their price on a car that gets driven hard.Cast wheels are poured into a mold and are the most affordable option. Flow-formed wheels start as a casting, then the barrel is spun and stretched under heat and pressure, which aligns the grain structure and lets the barrel be thinner and lighter while getting stronger. Forged wheels are machined from a solid billet of forged aluminum and are the lightest and strongest of the three, at the highest price.Common car bolt patterns are 5x100 on older Subaru and VW, 5x112 across Audi, VW and Mercedes, 5x114.3 on most Japanese and modern American sedans, and 5x120 on BMW and some GM. Hub bore matters here too. Aftermarket wheels usually ship with a larger bore than your hub, so hub centric rings are required to center the wheel on the hub instead of on the lug hardware.
