Forged Wheels

A forged wheel starts as a solid billet of aluminum that is compressed under enormous pressure, which aligns the metal grain structure and eliminates the porosity you get in a casting. The blank is then CNC machined down to the final wheel. Because forged aluminum is denser and stronger than cast aluminum, the finished wheel can use less material in the same places and still be stronger. A forged wheel is typically 20 to 30 percent lighter than a cast wheel of the same size.Forged wheels come in two main constructions. Monoblock forged wheels are machined from one piece, which is the lightest and stiffest option. Multi-piece forged wheels use a separate center and barrel bolted together, which allows nearly unlimited combinations of width and offset and lets a damaged barrel be replaced instead of scrapping the whole wheel.The practical reasons to choose forged are custom sizing and weight. If you need a width or offset that nobody produces off the shelf, forged multi-piece is usually the only way to get it. If you are chasing lap times or ride quality, the weight savings is real and measurable.
